Schemes:

Blackburn with Darwen Council works with partners to identify and provide many different external funding opportunities for local people and organisations. A database of current projects is available at the council's 'funding opportunities' page.

The Business Grants team have a range of expertise to help with grant applications in relation to business support and setting up a new business.

Blackburn with Darwen Community Fund

Blackburn with Darwen Community Fund is a small grants programme that is being run by Blackburn with Darwen CVS on behalf of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council as part of the 'Your Community Your Call' campaign.

The fund is open to local charities, social enterprises, voluntary or community groups and the group must not directly employ any paid members of staff. The group must be run by volunteers and use volunteers to deliver its activities.

Groups may apply for funding to:

Run an event to recruit more volunteers or to train existing volunteers;

Carry out a volunteer led activity that leads to community improvement (e.g. community clean up, fundraising event, run a youth club, arts/sports activity)

Use volunteers to deliver a community learning event, workshop or undertake volunteer led research to find resident views on neighbourhood improvement and to plan future activity.

Recruit, train or use volunteers to benefit the operation of the organisation.

Information on application procedures and further guidance can be found in the following links:

Guidance notes

Many local authorities are now moving away from grant-making and beginning to use commissioning as a way to distribute funding to the third sector. Local commissioners can be difficult to find and identify, however NAVCA have created a guide that may help: 'Finding your Commissioner''

Useful organisations:

Blackburn with Darwen CVS: www.bwdcvs.org.uk

This website provides details of a small community grants scheme, and provides information on projects that have been previously supported.

There is an online enquiry form that community groups can fill in to be informed when grants schemes do become available. Other details include an index of useful charities in the area.

The website was fairly easy to navigate and information on voluntary sector funding was accessible from using the A-Z search facility on the homepage, however much of the information provided on voluntary sector funding was out-of-date.

What is the DSC Funder Rating?

We need your help

Our ratings are by no means a final verdict, just a starting point to begin discussions about the voluntary sector’s experience of government funders. We are inviting all subscribers to share their experiences and contribute to the DSC Funder Rating. If you can help, please email us at ratings@governmentfunding.org.uk.
